We recommend that you lock your IronKey whenever it is not in use.

The best procedure is:

  1. Save all of your open files.
  2. Close any files or applications running from the IronKey (such as Firefox).
  3. Ensure the LED is no longer blinking.
  4. Click "Lock Drive".

You should not lock your IronKey while it is reading or writing files. In some cases, it may be possible to corrupt data if you lock or unplug your IronKey while it is working on something. Firefox may try to write a number of cache files to the IronKey when you close Firefox, so make sure to wait until the LED stops flashing before locking your IronKey.

You can lock your IronKey by clicking on the "Lock Drive" button in bottom left of the IronKey Control Panel, or by right-clicking on the IronKey system tray icon and selecting Lock IronKey. After it is locked, it is safe to unplug your IronKey.

NOTE:  You do not need to use Window's "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" function.
