Routinely backing up the files on your IronKey device is an important aspect of ensuring that you always have access to your protected files. For example, if your IronKey is ever lost or stolen, you can restore your data to a new IronKey device.

-------------------------------------------

The best way to back up your files using Secure Backup is to follow these simple instructions:

  1. Unlock your IronKey device and ensure that there is at least 15 kb of space available on your IronKey*.
  2. Click on the "Secure Backup" button in the IronKey Control Panel.
  3. After the Secure Backup application launches, select which files and folders on your device you want to back up by checking the appropriate checkboxes.  Please note: you should exempt IronKey-System-Files from your backup.
  4. Click the "Browse" button to select a location on your local computer where you would like to have your encrypted backup reside.
  5. Click the "Back Up Now"? button to start the backup process. It may take a few minutes depending on how much data is being backed up.

-------------------------------------------

Later, if you want to restore your files to an IronKey, follow these directions:

  1. Open the Secure Backup application on the IronKey you want to restore the files to.
  2. Click the "Restore from My Computer" tab.
  3. Click the "Browse" button to select the folder that contains all of your backed up data.  Please note: do not select a sub-folder within the backup, but rather the top-level folder you created for your backup.
  4. Select which files and folders on your device you want to restore by checking the appropriate checkboxes. Restoring existing files on your IronKey will overwrite the files to the backed up version.
  5. If you are restoring your files to a different IronKey, you will be prompted to enter the device password for the IronKey that the files were originally backed up from. This security measure helps ensure that others cannot access your protected files.
  6. Click the "Restore Now" button to begin the restore process. It may take a few minutes depending on how much data was backed up.

-------------------------------------------

Best practices for backing up your data include:

  • Make sure to back up your files regularly.
  • Back up your files before an IronKey Update.
  • Ensure that you have at least 15 kb of space on your IronKey before backing up or restoring the entire IronKey device.*
  • Do not modify files that are in the backed up folder on your computer. This could interfere with a restoration of those files.
  • Keep your encrypted back up files in a safe place that others will not be able to access.

-------------------------------------------

* To check to see how much space is available on your IronKey follow these steps:

  1. Click "Secure Files"? in the IronKey Control Panel to launch Windows Explorer.
  2. Right-click on drive that contains your secure files titled "IronKey Secure Files"?, which is occasionally displayed as "Removable Disk" instead.
  3. Select "Properties" in the drop-down menu that appears. This will display the used and free space available on this drive.

==========================

Note that the above only backs up your personal data on the Secure Files volume. If you need to backup your device's password, or any website information saved in Identity Manager the following resources explain how to do so:

Device Password*:  Video

* You must change your device's password to back it up online. You can then change it back to what it was originally if desired.
